Vintage Retro 60's Danish Black Illum Wikkelso Rocking Chair / Rocker - Excellent Condition in Newham, Northumberland for sale
For sale original danish rocking chair designed in 1958 by Illum Wikkelso in black matt finish. The chair was produced by danish furnituremaker N. Eilersen in the 1960's or early 1970's. This rocking chair is both a sculptural and practical piece of furniture. Organic in form yet stylish and simple, this chair is a true Wikkelso piece. Great modern look with sculpted arm details. Sturdy and comfortable, ready to sit in your living area, reading room or even the nursery. Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999) was one of the great danish designers. After graduating from The School of Arts & Crafts in Copenhagen, Illum Wikkelso was employed by fine cabinet maker Jacob Kjaer and the architectual firm of Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard-Nielson where he made his considerable mark on the danish modern design world and carried on to produce some of the countries most striking and beautifully crafted furniture. He received several medals and awards for his work, and in 1944 he moved to Århus where he worked as an interior designer until becoming an independent furniture designer in 1954. A few years later, he moved his studio to a small village south of Århus and established himself in a two-century old farm. From this idyllic workshop he designed his signature furniture, which was constructed according to his ethos that furniture should embrace the body smoothly and tenderly, and should be a delight to the eye but also be solid and durable. Size of rocking chair (approximately): Depth: 28" (71cm) Width: 23" (58cm) Height: 36" (92cm) Seat Height: 17" (43cm) This rocking chair is in excellent (original) vintage condition with some light marks commensurate with age and use. I have had this chair available for sale several times and this one is in the best condition I have ever seen. It is free of any damage or repairs. The chair is sturdy with no loose joints or spindles and no separation to the seat. There is wear to the colour on the armrests as can clearly be seen in the photographs. It has been cleaned and waxed. The chair still retains original “Danish Furnituremakers Controle” label as well as a furnituremaker label “N. Eilersen Grundlagt 1895”.
